Tech:Student Storage

Contents

Individual Accounts

Technology Services has allocated storage for all grade 1 - 12 students. When a student logs in, the system automatically connects this storage to the H: drive

Quotas

To prevent one student monopolizing all the available storage space, a quota has been implemented limiting the amount of data that can be stored in each user's H: drive. The quotas are as follows:

  • Elementary - 100 MB
  • Middle School - 250 MB
  • High School - 500 MB

The information at File Storage Quota applies to the students.

Teacher Access

When a teacher logs in to a computer, the S: drive is mapped to a folder that contains all the H: drive folders at their school. The folders are listed by last name and the pupil ID of the student.

All teachers at a school have read access to all student folders, and the tech teachers at each school have modify privileges.

Backup

Currently, we do not have the resources to fully back up the student data storage. We do have an ability to "undelete" a file that is accidentally removed, but this feature is very time-dependent. We can not restore something that was removed over a few weeks prior.

As more backup resources become available, student data may be more fully backed up in the future.

Elementary School Generic Accounts

At the elementary schools, Technology Services has created a school-wide "generic" account that can be used instead of requiring the students to remember an individual username / password.

Quota

The generic account has a 2 Gigabyte quota. This limit is shared by all users that log in using the generic account.

Teacher Access

The generic account’s H: drive is included in the list of student folders accessible through the S: drive as described above. For example, Flynn Elementary's generic account is be located at S:\genflyn.

Trade Offs

If the student logs in using the generic school account, the H: drive is connected to a shared folder that all students have access to. In this location, any student can manipulate and delete any file(s) in the folder. If a student changes or deletes files, or puts anything inappropriate in this folder the log files will show the generic account. There is no way determine who the student was that changed the file.

If a student logs in using their individual login, then the H: drive is connected to a private folder that only that student has access to. This prevents other students from affecting their files, and also gives us some accountability as far as which student is placing inappropriate files on the server.

Individual accounts can be more difficult for the younger kids, because they have to remember a unique username and password, but it allows some level of privacy. A generic account can be posted on the wall (or logged in by a staff member before the students arrive), but files could be deleted / created without any accountability.

Either the individual account or the generic account can be used at the school's discretion.
